Fast Forward: The combination of food in an art context seems to be very attractive to people. I came up with a piece that I call "Musique a'la Mode." And, it's a piece using a large variety of kitchen utensils, from popcorn poppers to blenders and kettles.

This is one of the sections -- it's stainless steel bowls, upside down, played with OXO Good Grip flexible turners.

These are sauce pots that I got in Chinatown. Apparently, in all the restaurants, they use these rather good-quality, stainless steel sauce pots that have a very nice ring to them. Maybe you can listen to them...

When I decided I was going to do this piece with all these kitchen utensils, I realized that a lot of shopping was going to be involved. And, for the last three months or so, I've been making a bee-line to all the kitchen utensil stores, both in New York and the surrounding area of about 100 miles.

I find most things musical. I would find chomping on some chips musical, or walking in a puddle musical. It's just a matter of to what degree they are musical. You can go into a store and pick something up that you think is going to be interesting, sonically -- and then I usually hit it with my hand and it either lets out a melodious ring, or just an ungrateful thud.

There's something to do with food that people like. That's probably an understatement. It's a good tip or a secret, if you're an artist, put some food in there, and it's more likely to be successful.
