Every weekend, Teri Echtenkamp is out shopping for vintage purses in Omaha. And while she's purse-hunting, Echtenkamp listens to Nina Simone's rendition of "Sinnerman." She says Simone's voice helps energize her search and even helps her find purses of the 1950s and 1960s. Echtenkamp loves finding the story behind each purse: "My favorite thing is when I find something in it. I get a little glimpse of who it was carrying it."

Bill Radke: Teri, I've got to know why "Sinnerman" is your weekend soundtrack.
Teri Echtencamp: On the weekends, I'm often in my car. I rent a little space in an antique mall, so I go picking all the time. My booth is primarily known for my purses. I have a lot of vintage purses. I go to garage sales and estate sales and thrift shops, and it just has a kind of an intenseness, a franticness to it. It's kind of like when I'm trying to find a hidden treasure.
And why "Sinnerman" power your antique searches?
Her voice just instantly puts me back in that time and that age. And who knows, maybe the spirit and the energy of it kind of helps me find items of that time. And just that push, that power that she has in her voice.
Why do you love the 50s and 60s era purses so much?
They just had style. I love to hear stories. And I love to tell stories too. When I get a vintage purse, I think, 'What is the story behind this purse? What's the energy behind it?' My favorite thing is when I find something inside it. I get a little glimpse of who was carrying it. And I just think that's kind of cool.
Do you wish you had lived in that era, in the 50s or the 60s?
Well probably like the romantic-ness of it. But certainly not because of the oppression, civil rights, women's movement - no way! I like where I am.
This song is a spiritual about how we run from God. And you're listening to it while you shop?
Yeah. It's kind of ironic, isn't it?
