Nothing says September like getting up, reading the paper, then driving out to the country to go apple picking. That morning paper and box of apples might more in common than you think. The phrase "bad apple" or "a few bad apples" can mean apples you don't want to eat, or people you don't want in your neighborhood. Weekend America's John Moe takes a look at the intersection between socially unacceptable behavior and tree fruit.

What I learned about apples and bad apples.

  • An apple with discoloration doesn't always taste bad. Still, growers won't even bother putting it on the market because it looks weird and people shop with their eyes.
  • The ones with worms in them, though, probably do taste pretty bad.
  • Just about every apple can be used in some way, either on store shelves, in sauce or juice, or just as compost.
  • All apples will become bad eventually, the trick is finding the right time to eat them.
  • Washington state exports over nine billion apples every year.
  • One bad apple can't really spoil the whole barrel because barrels aren't used any more.
  • A bad apple can still spoil a whole lot of other apples in the 900-pound storage bins they're sorted into prior to shipment.
