There's been little rainfall in Los Angeles, coupled with a mild winter. Governor Schwarzenegger has declared fire season officially open. Which wasn't news to Angelenos who watched Griffith Park and Catalina Island catch fire this week. Normally, fire season doesn't start until June or July, so firefighters will have a long, hot road ahead. Fires are also blazing in Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, and Kentucky. We asked Monique Rocca, who teaches wildland fire science at Colorado State University, what this means for the months ahead.
