Colts vs. Bears

No, we're not talking Super Bowl. In our long tradition of uncovering the hidden truth about furry critters, Weekend America's John Moe asks a question that's undoubtedly popped up to anyone contemplating this weekend's match up: What would happen if a real live horse colt took on a real live grizzly bear? After much investigation, John Moe finds out that it's not the bear cakewalk one might think.

Notes from Reporter John Moe...

The coverage for this weekend's Super Bowl has been extensive. Numerous TV stories and newspaper articles have been written about the game. Some journalists have chosen to discuss how this is the first Super Bowl to feature an African-American head coach, two of them in fact. Other reporters have covered perennial All Pro Peyton Manning, quarterback of the Colts, who is in the big game for the first time after years of near misses. Some folks covering the game have spotlighted Chicago's oft-arrested defensive lineman Tank Johnson and whether the courts would even allow him to go to Miami for the game. But here at Weekend America, in case you haven't noticed, we do things a little differently.

Throughout all the discussion of "Bears" and "Colts", there has been very little coverage from a zoological angle. Who are these animals that Indianapolis and Chicago have aligned themselves with? And what can we learn about the teams by exploring their animal totems? We visited with Wendi Mello. She's a bear keeper at Northwest Trek in Eatonville, Washington. Standing just a few feet from two grizzlies that would gladly kill us if given half the chance, we had Wendi assess the bear's chance in a fight against a real colt. Then we paid a visit to Doris Harwood, a professional horse race trainer in Kent, Washington. She filled us in on how the colt would stack up against a bear. Sure the bear has razor sharp claws and that whole killing thing but don't count the colt out. Turns out they practice beating each other up, can kick really hard, and run 40 miles an hour. We don't recommend basing any Super Bowl wagers on our analysis but you might not look at these two teams, or any team, the same way after hearing this story.
