Paul the Turtle
(Nancy Hartley)

We try to bring you the full scope of what's happening in America on the weekends. One way we do it is through a little box on our Web site called "America's Weekend" -- it grabs the latest 98 pictures from the photo-sharing site Flickr that are tagged "Weekend America," then shares those photos with you.

Behind every great photo is a great story. We spoke to two people who've taken some of our favorite photos, and asked them for the stories behind them:

Nancy Hartley, Orlando, Fla.:
In this photo, I have taken a picture of Paul, my turtle. Now that it's getting warmer, Paul came out of his shell and started walking around in his tub that I keep him in. I've been collecting turtles since 1960, and I have a collection of them that totals now 1,215 turtles. I relate to how they move because I'm kind of slow and easygoing -- kind of like a turtle.

Lydia Selk, Puyallup, Wash.:
I've started taking suburban nature walks through the streets and alleys of my town. This Saturday, I decided to walk through a little known road -- I call it "garbage alley" -- and it's an alley where people just dump their garbage. I saw a couple of mattresses sitting in two inches of mud and there was one that really caught my eye. It was partially burnt and the rusty bed springs were visible. I thought that the curls and the swirls were so beautiful that I had to take a picture. There's so much beauty in them and people just throw them away! I really try to find beauty in everything around me... and I have an affection for garbage.
