Bill Radke: Tommy, why is your weekend soundtrack about fear?

Tommy Grimes: Well, when I was in college, I think I had this general fear about growing up and what was going to happen after graduation. So when I first heard this song in 2002, it just kind of struck me as being exactly about what I was going through at that time.

How did you cope with the fear?

I was trying actually to put myself into situations that would make me have to overcome the fear and I applied for an internship in Germany. This song was a real motivating factor for that, you know? It was of one of those things where you're filling out these applications thinking, "Do I want to do this? Do I not?" And something as simple as having this song on in the background just makes you say, "You know what, just go for it."

Do you have a favorite section of this song?

Yeah, there's a line that says, "You've turned around and life's passed you by." I think I was just afraid that I was going to wake up one day and be middle-aged and full of regret and feel like life and had passed me by. Instead of letting life go on its own course, that's when I kind of decided to start taking these steps to really make my life my own.

And you're still able to do that?

I'm working on it.

A lot of us say when we're 21, "I'm not going to wake up at 44 with regrets." It's hard to stick to.

Sure, but that's where having music like this -- that you can turn to and reaffirm your beliefs when you hear it -- kind of keeps you on track. I've decided to go back to school. It's something I never thought I'd be able to do. And as of last fall, I've decided to go back for an MBA. So I'm now in my second semester and it's going really well.

Tommy Grimes in Orlando, Fla., thanks for sharing your weekend soundtrack.

You bet, thanks a lot, Bill.
