Peter Clowney

  • Peter Clowney's entire professional career has been in public radio. But he's happy about that. He got his start in 1993, cutting tape at "Fresh Air" in his hometown of Philadelphia. Since then he's been a reporter, editor, and producer in a succession of fantastic shows. Clowney was one of the first producers at "This American Life," one of the group winning the Peabody award in 1996. As senior editor at PRI's "Studio 360" he won another Peabody in 2004 for his writing and editing of the "American Icons: Herman Melville's Moby Dick " special.

Right before coming to "Weekend America," Clowney was a senior editor at "Marketplace," American Public Media's award-winning program about "life through the lens of money." He managed the New York bureau, and the "innovations" and health desks. Sadly, he didn't get to go to China on "Marketplace's" big special there, but he has taught and recorded radio documentaries in lots of other places, such as South Africa, Ethiopia, Macedonia, Slovakia, Cuba and France.

Clowney was also a mid-career fellow in 1999-2000 at the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University, which, though now gone, was a marvelous open ticket to experiencing the university and the New York arts scene. Clowney's arts reporting at WHYY in Philadelphia won more than two dozen regional and national awards. That experience has helped him coordinate American Public Media's "Artists Initiative," of which "Weekend America" is a substantial part. Clowney lives with his wife Julia and children Owen and Tadelech in St. Paul, Minn.
