Last weekend, a story about one pit bull with two different owners riled up our listeners. The pit bull was rescued from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and now the original owner and the new owner in California are in the middle of a custody battle. Weekend America speaks with Amanda St. John, founder and director of Muttshack.org, to get her thoughts on the situation.

I have had a lot of dogs and have rescued several. I have found that the dog can make its own decision. Allow the two humans and the dog to get together and let the dog decide. While one human will be disappointed, they can take some comfort that the dog has followed its heart.

My heart breaks for the trauma Kara Keyes and her family suffered after Katrina, but the loss of their dog Crown can have a happy ending. She's had a good home for 2 years with Pia Salk and I truly feel, were I in the Keyes' shoes, I would follow the adage "if you really love her, let her go." Crown, now Sweetie, is healthy and stable and loved; surely this is what is really important. The Keyes have a new pup and can offer their love there, and always know that Crown is happy. How lucky for one dog to have two families who adore her so - but there are unlimited numbers of animals who still need a caring family. Litigating over this situation seems ludicrous. King Solomon is needed!

I don't understand how a foster-caretaker for a dog, now thinks she is the dog's true owner. Pia, I am sure, knows better. Crown is not Sweetie and should be returned to her rightful owner, Kara.

This shows how important the total emergency response to a disaster is and must be. We cannot have well-meaning unaffiliated volunteers (UAs in the jargon of disasters) taking matters into their own hands. Shouldn't we "vet" foster dog parents in a similar fashion as foster parents?
