When Sam, a student at Augsberg College in Minnesota got sober, he got a job stacking dishes in the school cafeteria. After work, he'd play the dining hall's out-of-tune piano.  He has no musical training, yet taught himself the first nine measures of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" by placing an ear on top of the piano and listening to a recording of the piece on his iPod with the other.
