Vice Presidents We Never Knew
Anyone who ever got trashed in Tompkins Square Park on Manhattan's Lower East Side has paid a fitting homage to President James Monroe's veep Daniel D. Tompkins, for whom the park is named. Tompkins reportedly was known to preside over sessions of Congress while inebriated. In addition to being an alcoholic, Tompkins was also a graduate of Columbia College, a New York State governor and, at 99 days, he holds the distinction for having the shortest post vice-presidential life.
