Amarillo International Foods opened in April 2004. Mariya Sher Ali opened the store after having worked as a waitress and at the Tyson meat plant in town, where a number of refugees in Amarillo are employed. The store caters to the shopping needs of many of the refugees who are arriving in Amarillo, stocking foods from Bosnia, Sudan, Iran and many other countries. (Ann Heppermann and Kara Oehler)
