William R. King was sworn in as vice president on March 24, 1853, while he was vacationing in Cuba. This special concession was granted because of King's ill health, to which he succumbed less than a month later. Their relationship prompted scandalous speculation amongst the Washington press corps at the time, and earned him the nicknames "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy" from Andrew Jackson.
