Scientists in Texas and Nebraska are trying to prove that political views can be inherited. But some of us know from Thanksgiving dinners that there's no connection between genes and political views. Two brothers, Brian and Allen Mann, are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. They tell us how they get through family dinners, with the family in tact.

I cannot discuss politics with my family. The last time I tried, I felt insulted and belittled and stopped communicating with two of my sisters for several months. As Thanksgiving approached and we were asking what, about the holiday, would still be lingering two days later, I thought of the anger and hurt that followed those family holiday dinner conversations, if politics came up. That's why it was such a wonder to find Brian and Allen Mann, two brothers as different from each other as my sisters and I are, who could nonetheless discuss their views without alienating one another. I hope their analysis of how they've been able to keep the dialogue open inspires families everywhere. After all, the winter holiday family meals are just around the corner.
